Unifi Install - Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Today we were lucky enough to get to install the new Gen2 Cloudkey+ from Ubiquiti. Ubiquiti offers the fastest, most solid Wifi solution here in Thailand. The new Cloudkey has a built-in battery so that it can power down the Cloudkey if there is a power outage. This prevents it from losing power during an important task, it senses when the power is cut and starts the process of a safe shut-down, preserving your settings.

All-in-One Remote Control

All-In-One Remotes

Smart Remote Control

We just took delivery here in Phuket of some Harmony Elite all-in-one remote controls for a few of our installs.

These universal remote controls can be useful in a smart home if you don’t already have a control system in-place. If you already have a Control4 System to control your home then a Neeo remote would be ideal and would fit in with the Control4 ecosystem - giving you access to all your automation, lighting and music systems.

So - What exactly is an all-in-one remote?

It is a remote control that replaces all of your current remote controls for that area, for example a living room might have separate remote controls for the TV, Blue Ray player, AppleTV, Soundbar or surround system and AndroidTV. An all-in-one or Universal remote takes the place of all these remotes, controlling each piece of equipment, so you can relegate your old remote controls to a cupboard.

How does it work?

You program the remote with the information of what your setup consists of so for example your TV model number, Bluray Player etc… including which HDMI port is used by the equipment and where the sound comes from (TV, Soundbar or Surround Sound System). It can then issue commands to each piece of equipment and you set up Activities such as “Watch TV” , “Watch BluRay”, “Watch AppleTV”, “Watch Netflix” and so on. Then simply press the one button and it switches all the equipment on (or off) and to the right inputs.

Harmony Remote
Harmony All-In-One remote control for your home

What can an all-in-one remote do?

  • Turn on relevant equipment and switch TV source at the touch of a button.

  • Allow control of basic lighting scenes.

  • Give you access to equipment specific buttons depending on activity selected.

  • Turn off all your equipment with a single button press.

Basically the purpose of an all-in-one remote is to declutter your remotes, replace them all with one remote control that can at single button push turn on all the equipment, select the right source, channels and turn it all off once you’ve finished, easily.

Bose to Close (All Retail Stores in US, Europe, Australia & Japan)

Bose is to close all of it’s retail shops in the United States, Europe, Japan & Australia.

Altogether 119 stores will be closed.

Bose Store.jpg

The first Bose store opened in 1993 and the stores are used to sell a variety of Bose music systems to customers directly. They offer tailored demo rooms where customers could sit and listen and provide personal, private demonstrations for Wave music systems and Lifestyle home theater systems. As smartphones changed the industry, the company’s focus turned to mobile, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi solutions. Today, Bose noise-cancelling headphones, truly wireless sport earbuds, portable speakers, and smart speakers.

Bose VP - Global Sales.jpg
Originally, our retail stores gave people a way to experience, test, and talk to us about multi-component, CD and DVD-based home entertainment systems.

At the time, it was a radical idea, but we focused on what our customers needed, and where they needed it — and we’re doing the same thing now.
— Colette Burke - Vice President - Global Sales - BOSE

In other parts of the world, Bose stores will remain open, including approximately 130 stores located in Greater China and the United Arab Emirates; and additional stores in India, Southeast Asia, and South Korea.

Bose has stated that this is as a direct consequence of the shift by consumers to purchasing online - Bose products are still to be carried at Amazon, Best Buy, Target, Apple stores, other third-party retailers, and on the company’s own website.

Sonos just sued Google in US Federal Court

Digital multi room audio pioneer Sonos just sued Google in US Federal court over patents that it says Google infringed upon.

Back in 2013 Google agreed to design its music service to work easily with Sonos range of multi room audio amplifiers and speakers. As part of this project, Sonos effectively handed over the blueprints of it’s speaker designs.

At the time Google was an internet company and didn’t make hardware for the smart home, let alone speakers.

Patrick Spence - CEO of SONOS

Patrick Spence - CEO of SONOS

We’re left with no choice but to litigate, Google has been blatantly and knowingly copying our patented technology,”

“Despite our repeated and extensive efforts over the last few years, Google has not shown any willingness to work with us on a mutually beneficial solution. We’re left with no choice but to litigate.
— Patrick Spence - Sonos CEO

Sonos were also rumoured to be also gunning for Amazon and their Alexa range of speakers but had decided they couldn’t risk battling two tech giants in courts at once. Both companies had responses to the move by Sonos.

Jose Castaneda - Google

Jose Castaneda - Google

Google and Sonos had discussed both companies intellectual property for years, and we are disappointed that Sonos brought these lawsuits instead of continuing negotiations in good faith. We dispute these claims and will defend them vigorously,
— Jose Castaneda - Google spokesman
The company did not infringe on Sonos’s technology. The Echo family of devices and our multiroom music technology were developed independently by Amazon,
— Natalie Hereth, Amazon

Sonos is initially suing over five patents but insists that Google has violated more than a hundred.

It’s becoming increasingly common for the mega-tech companies such as Apple, Amazon and Google to be accused of exploiting their leverage over other companies and even consumers to push their products.

We just got back from a trip to Hua Hin, Our client has built a beautiful retirement home where they envision spending quality time with their children and family.

Our engineers installed a superfast wifi system from Ubiquiti which sees all areas of the villa with fantastic wifi so everyone can stream, skype, watch movies and play games at the same time, without dropping off or having to reconnect between rooms and areas.

150” Cinema Screen in Glorious 4k

Next up was a 150” Screen cinema, actually this turned out to be 148.5” as we had the screen custom made to measure within the built-in furniture. It’s a big screen but doesn’t dwarf the room and is accompanied by a 7.1 Onkyo surround sound system with in-wall speakers, a Polk sub and in-ceiling speakers for the rear. Visuals are powered by a pin sharp 4k projector from Epson.

4k Projector from Epson with in-ceiling rear speakers and a Ubiquiti access point.

For multi room audio we used the brilliant Sonos Amps with in-ceiling speakers and outdoor speakers by the pool, it sounds fantastic and is so easy to operate - anyone can be listening to their favourite music anywhere in the house in a matter of seconds.

New Neeo Remote from Control4

New Neeo Remote from Control4

I first saw the Neeo remote a few years ago at a trade show, their small stand was part of the Zigbee alliance stand and was very busy - they didn’t actually have any remotes to sell at the show (or they did and sold out of them very quickly).

Fast forward a couple of years and they’ve since been bought by Control4, which was a great idea as the older Control4 remotes were starting to show their age and the Neeo is a beautiful remote control to control your Smart Home with.

Now or more precisely on November the 12th 2019 you will be able to order it from Control4.

Here’s what Control4 say about the new Neeo remote;

Ubiquiti Superfast WiFi Install

Ubiquiti Superfast WiFi Install

We are installing a Superfast Ubiquiti Wifi at a local business in Chiang Mai starting from today.

It’s a total of 18 Access points and 5 powered switches managed by a Ubiquiti Cloud Key. The network will be seen as one seamless SSID across the whole business area, with guest network access so that the business function is not impaired when hundreds of visitors try and stream youtube on their phones at the same time.

Every Smart Home or Business should feature rock solid wifi.

18 zone Ubiquiti WiFi Install

One of the very common mistakes that is made here in Thailand in homes and commercial premises is that multiple access points are used all with different names/SSID’s so you have Floor 1, Floor 2, Floor 3 or Master Bedroom, Living Room, Kitchen all as basically completely separate wifi systems. Meaning that moving between the zones is anything but seamless as the phone or computer you are using physically breaks off connection as you move between areas.

Ubiquiti Networking

Instead, the network should be seen as one SSID (wireless name) and smoothly switch between nearest access points without interrupting users experience. Whilst Mesh networking can be used when you have no way to run cable to a location it is ALWAYS better to run the access points cabled with Cat5 or Cat6 (Both can do Gigabit) and leave the Mesh kit for expansion to or coverage to areas where it’s impossible to run cable to.

CEDIA: Vivint announce Control4 integration

Vivint’s security engine now integrates two-way with Control4 home-automation systems — a technological milestone for the mass-market provider, and a nod to Vivint’s new Smart Home Authorized Pro program.

Vivint Smart Home, a pioneer in self-contained security and smart-home systems, will announce two-way integration with Control4 home automation systems at CEDIA Expo 2019 – marking Vivint’s first integration with a custom-oriented home-control system.

With Control4’s SDDP technology embedded in Vivint’s Smart Hub panel, Control4 users will be able monitor and control their Vivint security system via standard Control4 interfaces.

In addition, any security sensor in the Vivint ecosystem can be incorporated into Control4 scenes and alerts. For example, if someone trips a motion sensor in the living room after sunset, the event could trigger Control4 to turn on the lights in that room to a dim level and flip the TV to CNN on mute.

“Basically, Control4 gets to use our sensors,” says Chris Ivie, senior director of Pro Channels at Vivint.

Control4 Vivint

The effort took some technological doing on Vivint’s part – the company is new to the integration driver business – but the work had less to do with delivering a plug-and-play experience for integrators than to demonstrate Vivint’s commitment to the home-technology channel.

After all, much of the channel is still wondering: What is Vivint doing here?!

Vivint launched its Smart Home Authorized Pro program earlier this year, inviting select retailers, integrators and other home-technology professionals to effectively enter the security and mainstream home-automation business … without the burden of starting such a venture from scratch.

Vivint draws from its vast marketing, financial, technical, operational, educational, sales, legal, logistical and other critical resources to give Authorized Pros everything they need to succeed.

Control4 Smart Home.png

Participants head to Vivint’s Salt Lake City headquarters for arguably the best sales training that exists in this industry (I know, I’ve been!) and probably countless other industries as well. They return to their shops armed with easy-to-use software for presenting Vivint products and services to clients, and closing the sale … and scheduling the installation … and following the progress … and ensuring a positive customer experience … that generates new referrals … to fuel the operation and feed the retirement fund.

Vivint’s army of well-trained, clean-kempt technicians handle pretty much everything after the initial sale, and even suggest system upgrades and add-ons on-the-spot if appropriate. The Authorized Pro gets credit for products and services sold by Vivint itself, for as long as the client remains a Vivint subscriber.

The program is off to a good start, with some high-profile dealers signing on, and a network of independent reps recruited from the custom market.

Still, Vivint has a lot to prove to a skeptical market raised on Control4, Crestron and the like. Collaborating with these influential companies makes a definite statement, Ivie explains.

“Ours isn’t really a technical play,” he says. “We’re a business play. We’re bringing a full end-to-end solution to this channel.”

Vivint might have been queasy at first about relinquishing some control over the user experience to a third-party platform and the folks who install it. But it was always part of the plan to meet integrators half-way.

Vivint never integrated with traditional home-automation systems before. Why should they? They were busy activating hundreds of thousands of new security and smart-home accounts every year, driven largely by efficiency and predictability.

Vivint has new responsibilities, though, as a partner to so many Authorized Pros. As Ivie tells it, Vivint execs never flinched at the thought of integrating with the Control4s of the world: “Of course an end-to-end solution requires us to integrate,” they would say.

That one home-automation driver could open a world of opportunity for Control4 dealers (and others to come).

“We have millions of [Vivint] installations running solo,” Ivie says. “I think it’s a massive opportunity for dealers to hook into those systems.”

Long-time integrator Joe Whitaker, a Control4 dealer who joined the Vivint Pro program earlier this year, can’t wait to get going.

“With the new Control4 driver,” he says, “we will be looking back to our current Vivint customers, but also the thousands of other Vivint subscribers in our service area.”

At the same time, Whitaker sees the company’s existing Control4 clients as likely prospects for new RMR (recurring monthly revenue) programs, featuring security monitoring and SHaaS (smart home as a service).

“Either way,” Whitaker says, “we have more business opportunities for ourselves, and more ways to serve our clients with an exceptional, all-inclusive experience.”

And exceptional it is, Whitaker tells us. He’s tied Control4 into practically every compatible security panel at one time or another, and none compares to the ease of integrating with the Vivint Smart Hub.

“It requires zero extra gear and zero extra software or licenses,” he says. “It only takes a couple of minutes and it’s totally secure.”

Furthermore, the two-way communications between Vivint and Control4 is lightning-fast, Whitaker explains. He’s grown accustomed to the slight but annoying lag between a tripped sensor and the system response.

“When a door is opened, it might not register on a Control4 system for several seconds,” he says. “Or if you program the lights to turn on when a sensor is tripped, you might have to stand in the dark for a while.”

Vivint-based events, on the other hand, are reported immediately to Control4, which registers the events in an instant.

“Instant response and painless integration makes this one of the best security integrations I’ve ever seen,” he says.
